CHAPTER 15

THE PRESS

The press is the closing stage of all operation or its any intermediate stage. Depending on a press type (on the black-and-white, color printer or on the phototypesetting automatic machine), from document type (monochromatic, two-trichromatic or полноцветный) use those or other functions of the press (the composite press, rasterization and a color separation), offered профаммой Adobe Illustrator.

Adjustment of the printer and the press

/ standard adjustments of the printers installed in operating system Windows 98/2000, are accessible from Adobe Illustrator program. For this purpose it is necessary to fulfill one of menu commands File (File):
Document Setup (document Parameters) and in the opened dialog box to push button Print Setup (Printer);
Print Setup (Printer);
Print to (Print).

Then from the list of the installed printers to select demanded and to push button Properties (Properties).

The dialog box type depends on type of the selected printer, but the main varieties two: the PostScript-printer (fig. 15.1) and the PSL-printer which sometimes name the He-PostScript-printer (fig. 15.2).

Specific recommendations about usage of those or other parameters can be found in Operation manuals on pointers.

After setting of parameters of the printer it is necessary to execute command Print to (Print) menu File (File), which displays the dialog box with the same name (fig. 15.3), allowing to define printout parameters.

Rice 15.2. An example of a dialog box of Property: for the PSL-printer (HP LaserJet 5L)

Rice 15.3. Dialog box Print

In the upper part of a dialog box some convergence on the active printer are resulted, flag Print to File (to Print in a file) which setting allows to redirect the information from the driver of the device (printer) not on exterior port, and on a disk, on which controlling information for the printer (so-called "a printer file" with ргп extension will be saved) on the right is allocated. At setting flags there is accessible list Data (Data) in which two variants ASCII (Text) and Binary (Binary) are presented.

This flag is extremely useful for so-called to "the postponed press" which technology is widely applied in practice of graphic and polygraphic design as "printing" on the device missing physically allows to carry out. To receive a printer file, it is necessary to install the driver of the appropriate device in an operating system.

The printer file contains the full information for control of the output device, therefore, to receive a print any more it is not required neither operating system Windows, nor the program (in this case Adobe Illustrator): in a command line DOS it is enough to enter a command

copy/b <a name файла.prn> lpt1

And to push a key [Enter], to receive demanded printout on a paper or on a film.

In фуппе Print Range (a press Range) the parts of the document printed are defined:
All All);
Pages From... That (Pages with... On), numbering of pages is defined by setting groups View (Review) of tab Artboard (Mounting area) dialog box Document Setup (document Parameters), about these setting look further section "Page of the document and a printer quire" the present chapter;
Selection (the Selected area).

By default Adobe Illustrator program prints all visible layers. About layers look the detail information in chapter 10.

In group Copies (Copy) the amount of copies of printout, and flag Collate is defined (In selection) provides various sequence of the press of several copies of the multipart document: at setting of a flag the full copies (or the given range of pages) are printed sequentially (one for another) unlike standard sequence when successively copies of the same page (distinction visually are printed shows circuit change near to a flag).

In list Output (Color separation) is offered printing of the composite image (look further section "Printing of composite images" of this chapter) color-splitted bands (look chapter 16).

Flag Ignore Overprinting in Composite Output (to Ignore parameter Overprint in the composite press) provides an exception of parameter of superimposing (overprint) which is defined in palette Attributes (Attributes).

In list PostScript the choice of the version of language PostScript — Level I (Level 1), Level 2 (Level 2) or Level 3 (Level 3) is offered. If the printer supports PostScript Level 3 it is necessary to select this variant since the given version gives enhanced features of operation with color, decorative filling and graded-index grids.

Button Separation Setup (color separation Parameters) is accessible only at a choice in the list of printers of any PostScript-printer. The description of dialog box Separations on (the Color separation on) look in chapter 16.

In the field Source Space (the Color space of a source) is underlined a current color profile. If it is required to save it, in list Profile (the Color profile) it is necessary to select variant Same As Source from group Print Space (Color space of the printing device) (Identical with color space of a source), and if it is necessary for changing to select one of the presented color profiles. In the latter case there is accessible list Intent (a converting Method) in which algorithms of conversion of one color space in another are offered. The description of variants of converting look in chapter 4.

to Download (Loading of fonts) provides flag Force Fonts temporal подгрузку the font information in the current printer directly ahead of press performance.

Flag Bitmap Printing (Printing of a pointwise drawing) is installed at the press on the He-PostScript-printer with low resolution. In this case on the printer the image in the form of a bit card with resolution corresponding to the printer goes.

By default Adobe Illustrator program deduces on the printer all visible layers (visible layers). How to make layers invisible and unprintable, look chapter 10.
Nota Bene. Developers notify that the program of adobe Illustrator does not support format PDF Writer, therefore attempts use it as the press driver can to lead to unpredictable results.

Page of the document and printer quire

Creation of the image and its press practically are always dissolved in time, therefore the document prepared counting on форматодного of the printer which right now under repair (it is finite, can be one hundred other reasons), it is necessary to print with parameters of page of the document inappropriate each other and printer sheet.

Fortunately, many programs including Adobe Illustrator program, offer the decision of this problem — an automatic partition of the image on fragments (tilings), corresponding on the size to printing possibilities of the current printer.

That numbering of fragments, on which the image breaks (an example on fig. 15.4), it was displayed on the screen, is necessary to execute command Show Page Tiling (to Show a partition) menu View (Review).
Rice 15.4. Display of numbering of fragments (flag Tile Imageable Areas is installed)

Rice 15.5. Display of fragments at installed flag Single Full Page

In dialog box Document Setup (document Parameters) (fig. 15.5) in group View (Review) is offered three flags, defining a method of display and printing of fragments.
Flag Single Full Page (One full page), installed by default, provides display and printing of one page. Such method is applicable for printout of one fragment (for example, central) which gets to a printing zone.
Flag Tile Full Pages (Some the full pages) provides display and printing of the several pages containing separate fragments of the image (fig. 15.6). Such method can be applied, for example, to printing of the two-page brochure (if correctly all to calculate and allocate).
Flag Tile Imageable Areas (Printing areas of pages) provides display and printing of a separate fragment which has больший the size, rather than page. Such method allows to unpack the big fragment of the poster, for example, as a coloring test.

Rice 15.6. Display of fragments at installed flag Tile Full Pages

By operation with the documents which size of pages does not coincide with the sizes of sheets of the printer, it is necessary to be extreme "calculating". For example, on the press empty pages if the partition on fragments happens can be deduced in such a manner that dimensional boundaries of a picture transit by fragments not containing the image.

Such pages will not be deduced on the printer if in dialog box Print to (Print) in the field Pages From... That (Pages with... On) to specify a true range of pages.

Numbering of pages in such document is carried out from left to right and from top to down, since the first. Numbering changes it is not provided, as this numbering only for orientation of the user, and to the press it does not get. Therefore collecting the unpacked fragments of the image in a single whole, undoubtedly it is necessary to recall children's entertainments (game in cubes).

Relocation of page borders

By default the "real" page is allocated on image center, but page borders can be moved, possibility of the best composite layout on printing page thereby is provided.

Thus it is necessary to use very useful command Fit In Window (the Whole document) menu View (Review) before to make the decision on relocation of page borders.

For relocation of page borders special tool Page (Page) (fig. 15.7) which is allocated in one group with tool Hand (Hand) is provided.

Including the tool, move page borders to new position. At relocation two dotted rectangles are displayed: the exterior designates a page format, and internal — printing area of sheet.
Nota Bene. It is necessary to mean two singularities: at first, relocation always happens from the left lower corner, and secondly, the printing area which has abandoned limits of initial boundary, is not deduced on the printer.
Rice 15.7. Tool Page in a palette of tools and operation with it

Printing of composite images

Even if the image intends for a color separation and polygraphic playback, and then preliminary printout of the composite image on the black-and-white or color printer is necessary: for check and the proof, for coordination with the customer, for transmission to printing house as attending and etc.

Certainly that thus it is necessary to consider set of the "nuances" connected to parameters and possibilities of black-and-white and color printers (speech can go, for example, about a lineature, about color spanning, about треппинге and other).

Nevertheless, to unpack the image in a general view, it is necessary to execute command Print to (Print) menu File (File) and in list Output (Color separation) of dialog box Print to (Print) to select variant Composite (the Composite image).

Sawn-off shotgun labels

Sawn-off shotgun labels (crop marks) are put on a quire and serve as page border on which there is a sheet cropping in printing house (fig. 15.8). These labels can be formed easily by means of team Make to (Allocate) menu Object/Crop Marks (a sawn-off shotgun Object/label). They will form automatically on color-splitted bands if to install flag Use Printer's Marks (Labels by default) in dialog box Separation Setup (Color separation).

Besides simple labels of a sawn-off shotgun there are so-called "Japanese labels of a sawn-off shotgun" (Japanese-style crop marks) which will be allocated in the document if in section General (Cores) of dialog box Preferences (Setting) to install flag Japanese Crop Marks (Japanese labels of a sawn-off shotgun).
Rice 15.8. Simple and Japanese labels of a sawn-off shotgun

In the document such labels can be applied only once. If, ясре* буется to allocate some labels within page, бмотрите the following section. By default Adobe Illustrator program installs sawn-off shotgun labels on page edge, therefore such labels can not get on the printout executable by the printer. They are intended for an output of color-splitted bands in phototypesetting automatic machines on a film which format allows to display set of the auxiliary information and the labels necessary in the course of polygraphic execution.

If all the same it is necessary to install labels of a sawn-off shotgun within page it is necessary to arrive as follows.
By means of tool Rectangle (Rectangle) to contour necessary area, thus exterior parameters of a rectangle (color обводки and filling) have no value.
Selecting a rectangle, to execute command Make to (Allocate) menu Object/Crop Marks (a sawn-off shotgun Object/label) which replaces a rectangle on a sawn-off shotgun label.

These labels neither to select, nor it is impossible to move, therefore, if it is required to change position of labels or to refuse them, it is necessary to execute command Release to (Remove) menu Object/Crop Marks (a sawn-off shotgun Object/label).

Plural labels of a sawn-off shotgun

As it is marked in the previous section, the labels of a sawn-off shotgun formed by means of team Make to (Allocate) menu Object/Crop Marks (a sawn-off shotgun Object/label), it is impossible to repeat some times. At the same time there are situations,
Rice 15.9. Labels разрезки вoкруг images

For example at printing of cards when on one sheet than ten labels of a sawn-off shotgun is required more to tell more correctly, labels "разрезки".

In this case it is necessary to use command Trim Marks (Labels разрезки) menu Filter/Create (Filter/creation), allowing round the selected objects along the edges of a rectangle in which it is possible to inscribe these objects. To place labels разрезки (fig. 15.9).

Received as a result of a label are group of vectorial objects which can be moved and transformed as normal objects.
